Spring is one of my favorite times of the year on our urban homestead. I transition from prepping in planting to watching all of the hard work come to life. My days are more focused on keeping an eye on the baby plants and getting ready to harvest some spring plants such as Blackberries – Yummy. I wanted to give everyone a peak to what’s going in the homestead and give you a Spring Garden Tour.

Main Garden Tour

My main garden was my original garden that started my homestead at this house. It has 8 large raised beds and 2 small raised beds. I also have some containers and grow bags for planting additional items.

I use my grow bags for potatoes since they have different soil needs and they are easier for harvesting potatoes. I plant strawberries in a variety of ways mainly to squeeze as many as I can into the garden and I’ve been experimenting with the best method for my weather conditions. I use containers for some of my herbs and also to add pops of color with flowers. I love adding gerber daisies they are my favorite flower and are perennials in my zone.

During the spring into summer my main crops are tomatoes, pepper varieties, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, garlic, onions, and shallots. I also have a few others sprinkled in such as cucumber, carrots, tomatillo and melons. If you wan to know more about how I built this garden you can read Empty Space to Flourishing Urban Homestead…How my Little Homestead Started.

The video was recorded in May of 2023.

Small Backyard Garden Tour

This past winter I expanded and added another backyard garden. I already had a lemon tree in this area that was here when we purchased the home. I wanted to add a few more raised beds and continue the same look and feel from the larger main garden. This garden has 1 large raised bed, 4 small beds and I have added a mulberry tree and a lime tree in a pot.

Front Yard Gardens Tour

My front yard is a work in progress but I do have my berry canes, blueberry bushes, and a Fig Tree. The berry area of my garden is tucked in to a back corner that is off of my front porch and cannot really be seen from the street due to a tree. Before planting the berries this was an area that just had weeds. I purchased my berries for Park Seed Company and they are doing so well.

The front yard also has my fig tree. This was also here when we purchased the tree and has become rather large. I need to have it trimmed down even more this coming winter. Love making fig jam and may even try fig newtons this year.

The front yard is my next big project and I’m brainstorming ideas on how to redo it to include curb appeal and still provide more food.

Summer is on the way….

I am excited to see how the garden does this summer. It is looking promising in the spring and cannot wait to watch it grow. I am really hoping to get a large tomato harvest. I have been hit with some tomato struggles the last two years. Hoping all of the lessons I have learned will pay off this year. I hope you enjoyed the spring garden tour of the homestead and please like and share. How is your garden this year I’d love to know in the comments.
